Holy Trinity Elementary School 1909 E. Lincoln Bloomington, IL 61704
Special People Encounter Christ (SPEC) is a program of religious education for children and adults with special needs of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria.
SPEC is...Religious Education SPEC provides one on one instruction in the Catholic faith for children and adults with special needs. Trained volunteers share weekly lessons with their "special friend". The program meets every Tuesday during the school year from 6:30 - 7:30 PM. It is held at Holy Trinity Elementary School in Bloomington.
Besides individual instruction, group activities and social events such as music and art are incorporated into the program, which reinforces and enhances the participants' experience.
SPEC is...A Faith Community
SPEC is a worshiping community. We provide the opporunity to celebrate the liturgy and participate in the sacramental life of the church. With the help of all the parishes, the students celebrate the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a regular basis. Developing a prayerful spririt bind the SPEC community, both students and parents, closer to one another and Jesus Christ.
SPEC is...Parent Support Group Services
The SPEC Parent Support Group was the initiating group for Home of Hope.
Perhaps there have been times in your life when you wished you could share your experience of having a child with special needs with others; someone who would understand and listen with care. Perhaps you have felt the desire to reach out and support other parents who have children with special needs.
SPEC can provide you with a warm, caring group of supportive parents. When your child meets every week for class, the parens and family members gather not only to support one another emotionally, but to address immediate and long range goals and expectations. Guest speakers provide information on understanding your child's disability and what the future can hold for them.
Annual Retreat
In March we have an annual retreat at St. Patrick Church of Merna. This is animated by the L'Arche Community of Clinton, IA. The L'Arche Community is a community of disabled. This is a retreat partly given by other disabled adults.
Sacramental Preparation
In our religious education program we offer sacremental preparation - First Communion, Confirmation, etc.
Volunteer Opportunities
SPEC is in need of transportation to and from mass.
